Professional Liability Coverage

Who is eligible for professional liability coverage through the PLIT program?
Active AVMA members who are licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States may apply for professional liability coverage through the PLIT program. This includes practice owners, associates, and those in specialty categories such as federal, state, industry, and research. If you are legally practicing veterinary medicine, according to state regulations, coverage will respond to allegations of malpractice.

Does each doctor need a separate professional liability policy, or is everyone covered under the practice owner’s policy?
Every veterinarian must obtain an individual professional liability policy. Non-licensed veterinary employees such as technicians and assistants are defined as insureds under the treating doctor’s policy.

I would like to speak with a PLIT Trust Veterinarian. How do I contact them?
Call the PLIT office at 800-228-7548, option 2 or send an email to info@avmaplit.com. Mention that you would like to speak with a veterinarian and the representative will connect you with one of the four Trust Veterinarians on staff.

I am no longer practicing veterinary medicine; do I still need to carry a professional liability policy?
A professional liability policy through the PLIT program is occurrence based, which means that as long as you had coverage in place on the date of incident, your policy will respond to an allegation of veterinary malpractice.

Does the PLIT program offer professional liability coverage for veterinary technicians?
The AVMA PLIT program is an AVMA member service. At this time, technicians are not eligible for AVMA membership, therefore, they are not eligible for professional liability coverage through the PLIT program.
