About the PLIT
The AVMA PLIT commenced in 1962 and at the end of its first year, offered professional liability protection to 2,350 AVMA members. Over the decades, the PLIT expanded its product solutions to provide comprehensive and tailored coverages to veterinary practice owners. Products include business property/liability, workers’ compensation, commercial automobile, employment practices liability, as well as coverage for mobile practices, emergency clinics, and the state and specialty veterinary associations. After the PLIT business insurance portfolio was completed, personal insurance products for AVMA and student AVMA members launched. And most recently, an endorsement to the PLIT professional liability policy was offered, called veterinary license defense. This provides legal fees to respond to complaints against a veterinarian’s license. Today, more than 50,000 veterinarians and students participate in the PLIT-sponsored programs.

The AVMA also has a second insurance trust for group health and life, the AVMA GHLIT. The AVMA, AVMA GHLIT, and AVMA PLIT are three separate entities; each office operates independently and maintains separate client databases.
